Cleaning Your Heat Pump and Other Helpful Tips to Extend its Lifespan

So you’ve made a brilliant decision to purchase a heat pump to save money on your heating costs.  Or you are lucky enough to live in or purchase a home where there was already a heat pump installed.  So now what?  A heat pump is a large investment, typically lasting an average of 15 years.  How do we as the homeowner ensure that our heat pump stands up to the test of time to maximize its lifespan?

Here Are the Most Important Things You Can Do to Extend the Life of Your Heat Pump

Your Heat Pump Warranty is Your Best Friend

Make sure you register your heat pump when it is installed and be aware of the warranty on your unit.  Heat pump manufacturers have varying warranties for their parts and labour, so it is important to know the warranty attached to your unit.  It may also be a good idea to purchase an extended warranty plan for your heat pump, depending on what that is.  At Valley River Heat Pumps, located in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, we carry Gree, LG, and Haier brand heat pumps.

While many heat pumps offer a 10 year warranty, our Haier heat pumps offer the best warranty we can provide.  Haier heat pumps come with a 12 year parts and labour warranty on their units.  This is an excellent option, as the older a heat pump gets, the more prone it is to breaking down.

If you have purchased a home with an existing heat pump, make sure to obtain any warranty documents from the previous owner, as some warranties are transferable.  Even if you do not have any warranty documents, your unit may still fall under its manufacturer’s warranty. If your heat pump is not working as it should, the best way to check if any parts are under warranty is to have a licensed company check the health of your unit, and see if anything needs to be replaced.

Clean Your Unit More Often than You Think

An Annual Inspection performed on your heat pump yearly is the best defense to make sure it is犀利士
running as efficiently as possible.  During an annual inspection, a licensed HVAC installer will typically dismantle your heat pump, clean the inside of the unit and filters with specialized products for degreasing the coils, and also perform a 25 point inspection so that you know if your unit is working to peak efficiency.  A clean heat pump runs more efficiently, and does not put any additional strain on any of the mechanical parts.  During an annual inspection, when the heat pump is cleaned, it is also checked over for any issues that may lead to further degradation of your heat pump down the road.

Clean Your Filters

As the owner of a heat pump, you should clean your filter often, especially if you have pets in the home or if the heat pump is located in a dirtier space such as a workshop, garage, restaurant, warehouse etc.  It is amazing the amount of dirt that gets caught in your filters.  At the bare minimum, getting an annual maintenance cleaning done on your heat pump once a year will help keep it running at peak efficiency.

Heat Pumps Clean the Air

One of the great, and less highlighted features of heat pumps is that they also filter and clean the air in your home.  Heat pumps do a great job of filtering allergens and other harmful particles from your home so that you can breathe cleaner air.  During this filtering process, much of this debris gets caught in the filters.  Cleaning your filter monthly in between more specialized annual maintenance is an excellent way to ensure that the air you breathe is cleaner, and the heat pump operates efficiently without risk of breakdown.

The cleaner your heat pump, the better it will run and the longer it will last.  At Valley River Heat Pumps, we offer various packages for Annual Maintenance Cleanings for your unit.  If your heat pump is not working correctly, we also service all major brands of heat pumps for the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia.
